The AD/BC convention came into use in Europe during the early Middle Ages. It came into use because churchmen needed a method of date keeping which could be used across Christendom instead of a patchwork of regnal years and other local dating systems.

"A.D." stands for anno domini, Latin for “in the year of the lord,” and refers specifically to the birth of Jesus Christ. "B.C." stands for "before Christ." In English, it is common for "A.D." to...

So, in the original terminology, AD stands for Anno Domini (Year of our Lord) and BC stands for Before Christ. The newer terminology is CE (Common Era) and BCE (Before common era). The old one is still used more just because it's the convention, and most non-Christians don't care enough to really try to change it.

And why were they changed to BCE and CE? Our calendar was based on the birth of Christ; all years before Christ’s birth have traditionally been designated B.C. (before Christ) and those after his birth as A.D., an abbreviation for the Latin term “Anno Domini” which means “ in the year of the Lord.”

"Many authors use BC and AD because they are familiar and conventionally understood. Those who want to avoid reference to Christianity are free to do so." In terms of secular journalism, the 2019 version of the Associated Press Stylebook uses B.C. and A.D. (using the periods); as does the fourth edition of the UPI Style Guide, published in 2004.

In the modern calendar, we label all years with B.C. ( before Christ) or A.D. ( anno domini, or "in the year of our lord"). There is no "zero" year -- in this system, the year Christ was born is 1 A.D., and the year preceding it is 1 B.C. This practice was first suggested in the sixth century A.D., and was adopted by the pope of that time.

BC is an abbreviation of the English phrase before Christ, while AD is an abbreviation of a Latin phrase anno Domini. It's very strange that going across the arbitrary division line between two years also requires a change in the language of abbreviation.

There are several good reasons to choose BCE and CE over BC and AD: AD is almost certainly inaccurate—if Jesus existed, he almost certainly wasn't born in the year suggested. BC and AD privilege the role of Christianity in a society where it is no longer the defining belief system (separation... BC ...
