Simply so, what is TDS and PPM? Total Dissolved Solids (TDS) are the total amount of mobile charged ions, including minerals, salts or metals dissolved in a given volume of water, expressed in units of mg per unit volume of water (mg/L), also referred to as parts per million (ppm). A TDS meter is based on the electrical conductivity (EC) of water.

We have already mentioned ppm while explaining TDS. In chemistry, ppm is a common value used to denote the substances dissolved in minute quantities in air, water, and soil. PPM is basically analogous to the percentage. Just as one percent means one in hundred, one ppm is equal to one in one million parts of something.

The most common are Electro Conductivity (EC) and Parts Per Million (PPM). EC is the best way to display the TDS of a nutrient solution because it is a universal unit. Unlike PPM which is EC x 0.5 or EC x 0.7. Since there are two different conversions of EC to PPM, PPM becomes an unreliable way to describe nutrient concentrations because you never know whether someone is using the same scale as you are. To break it down:

To estimate TDS, one can use a meter that measures the Electric Conductivity (EC) of a solution, and convert the number to TDS in parts per million (ppm). Many meters will do this conversion. Total dissolved solids (TDS) is typically expressed in parts per million (ppm).

All TDS Meters first take the conductivity of the solution (the reservoir water) and then convert it into PPM (Parts Per Million). The value used to convert from conductivity to PPM varies between meters. Some use 500ppm per unit of conductivity many others use 700ppm per unit of conductivity.

PPM means parts per million. For example, 10 thousand PPM would be a 1 percent solution by weight. TDS means total dissolved solids. It is certainly possible to have 200 PPM of solids, or more, or less, dissolved in your water.

Several scales are currently used to measure how much electricity is conducted by nutrients including: EC = Electrical Conductivity, CF = Conductivity Factor, PPM = Parts Per Million, TDS = Total Dissolved Solids and DS = Dissolved Solids.
