In order to investigate how the user account was locked out click on the “Investigate” option in the context menu. After clicking on the “Investigate” button, “Lockout Investigator” window opens up. In this window, you can click on “Generate Report” button to generate the report to view the reason behind account lockout.

If you have any account lockouts you should a list like below. To display the details of these events and get the source of the lockout use this command. Get-WinEvent -FilterHashtable @{logname=’security’; id=4740} | fl. This will display the caller computer name of the lockout. This is the source of the user account lockout.

In the Security Log of one of the domain controllers which show the account as locked, look for (the Filter option will help a lot here) Event ID 4771 on Server 2008 or Event ID 529 on Server 2003 containing the target username. Specifically you need the log entries which show Failure code 0x18.

To unlock a user’s account, find AD user object, open the properties, go to the Account tab, check “ Unlock account. This account is currently locked out on this Active Directory Domain Controller ” and press OK. However, you can unlock your user account in Active Directory much faster using PowerShell cli.

Alternatively, event 4740 indicates user account is locked out after repeated logon failures, in this case, maybe, you could retrieve the information about user name, time/date from this event by reading all event 4740 via scripting.
