AdBlock speeds up your experience by preventing many resources from loading, like images, scripts, and much more. However, there is a cost for doing this, which is that the AdBlock plugin takes time to find the stuff it's supposed to block and then block it. That slows Chrome down.

AdBlock runs a background process in your Chrome which uses your system resources and slows it down. If you press Shift + Esc on chrome you will see a task manager showing you the memory taken by all the tabs and chrome extensions.

Registered to say that Chrome 51 beta is definitely MUCH slower with Adblock Plus installed. All sites load slow and hang up. I think it's adblock that's slowing down Google services (Gmail, Drive, Keep, Maps, etc) - even with it disabled on those domains. But when adblock is disabled fully, those services all run fine.

AdBlock should not negatively impact browser speed. There will be a bit of a delay when you first open your browser while it fetches your AdBlock filter lists. After that, pages generally load much faster because you're not downloading ads. If you're noticing a serious lag when you start up your browser, there are a couple of things you can do.

ABP can slow down your browser IF/WHEN you add a WRONG custom filter. It can also break some site or another, for the same reason. So if you stay away from custom filters, everything will be fine. If you feel like experimenting with custom filters instead, be prepared to breaking stuff.

The memory "in use" (but not really being used) keeps growing until Chrome slows down, becomes unstable, or crashes or crashes AdBlock. The browser does free up the memory eventually. It may just take a long time. (Note that browsers generally don't guarantee running garbage collection unless a shortage of available memory forces them to.)
