Go in to the "Network and Sharing Center", and on the left click "Manage Wireless Networks", from here click the add button and "Ad-Hoc network" should be one of the options. If it isn't there, it is possible you have some sort of other error.

This should be on "Ad-hoc" not on "Infrastructure". If it is already set to Ad-hoc, make sure that the SSID is correct. If the Band is set to auto, try the correct band for your desktop PC, also check that the Channel is set to the same as your desktop.

But the ad-hoc shortuct is missing from Windows 7 Starter edition(see screenshot below). If you are using Windows 7 Starter, you are licensed to use the ad-hoc network but NOT licensed to use the ad-hoc network shortcut inside Network and Sharing Center. Read the sentence again, we are talking about ‘ad-hoc network’ and the ‘ad-hoc network shortcut’ inside Network and Sharing Center. So Microsoft is actually confusing the hell out of novice users.

netsh wlan stop hostednetwork. Also update the network driver card to the latest version from the official website of the manufacturer. Go to the PC running Windows 10, open Command Prompt and type: netsh wlan show wirelesscapabilities.

Here are the steps to create an ad hoc network in Windows 7. Click on Start (Windows icon) and type wireless. Click on Manage wireless networks. Click on Add to add a network. Click on Create an ad hoc network. Click on Next. Enter a name for your network and configure the security options. Click on Next when you are done.
